How does orthodontic treatment work?
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. It involves the use of braces, aligners, and other orthodontic appliances to correct misaligned teeth and jaws.
Orthodontic appliances and treatment solutions straighten your teeth by applying light, constant force to the teeth to allow them to move in a predictable manner and direction. Some orthodontic treatments push on your teeth, such as braces and Invisalign® clear aligners, while others work by slightly pushing on your teeth, such as hidden lingual braces and fixed retainers. Your treatment will require regular adjustments by a Specialist to continue encouraging proper alignment and move you closer to your smile goals.
Why is orthodontic treatment necessary?
Orthodontic treatment is not necessary for everyone. However, many people can and do benefit from treatment at least once in their life.
The purpose of the treatment is to create a beautiful, straight bite and healthy gums. Orthodontics help improves your oral health by moving your teeth into an ideal position. This makes them easier to clean and care for. The reasons that people may need to undergo treatment include:
- Prominent teeth
- Overbite or underbite
- Missing teeth or gaps
- Required surgeries
Some people simply want to love the appearance of their smile. Whatever the reason you may need orthodontic care, the experienced team at Dublin Orthodontist is here to help. Book a consultation today to get started.
When should treatment start?
Knowing the right time to get braces or another orthodontic treatment is not always easy. And only a professional Specialist can give you an official diagnosis and treatment plan.
We recommend beginning orthodontic visits at 9 years old. At this age, a lot of the baby teeth are being shed, and the permanent teeth are starting to come through. We will be able to thoroughly assess if all the teeth are there or not and if there is any need to adjust the bite. The earlier your can catch dental misalignments, the easier (and usually quicker) it is to treat them.
Can orthodontic treatment be reversed?
Yes, orthodontic treatment can be reversed. You may notice your teeth shifting out of position if you stop wearing your post-treatment trainer.
Future extractions, gum disease, dental work, or other causes may reverse the effects of your orthodontic treatment as well, and these are more difficult to correct. Your Specialist may be able to adjust your retainer or make you a new one in order to gently shift your teeth back, or you may need to undergo treatment again.
